Castles

This part of Brabant is also the right place for lovers of castles, as the castles Kasteel Maurick, Herlaar and Kasteel Heeswijk are a stone’s throw from De Ruwenberg.

Kasteel Maurick is a beautiful castle that is hidden in the wooded area of Vught. Via the drawbridge you walk across the moat into the courtyard of the castle. Visit Kasteel Maurick and enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner.

Herlaar Castle is located on the north bank of the Dommel, a hundred meters from the hamlet of Halder, to which it is connected via a bridge over the Dommel. Haanwijk hunting lodge is located further from the river and four hundred meters north of the castle. Via a walking route from the estate of Hotel De Ruwenberg you can walk to this beautiful castle in 2 km.

Kasteel Heeswijk is a former moated castle near Heeswijk in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The castle dates back to the 11th century. Already in the year 1080 a predecessor of the current castle was built, a so-called motte castle. Heeswijk Castle is about 8 km by bike from Hotel De Ruwenberg.

Discover the many nature reserves near Hotel De Ruwenberg, such as the Oisterwijkse Bossen & Vennen, National Park Loonse en Drunense Duinen and De Maashorst.

The Oisterwijkse Bossen & Vennen are special, relaxing and inspiring all year round. On the various walking, cycling and horseback riding routes you will discover – whether or not accompanied by a forest ranger – the splendor of one of the Netherlands’ most unique nature reserves. Because where can you find no less than 80 fens in one nature reserve?

National Park De Loonse en Drunense Duinen is more than 3,500 hectares in size and is located between the cities of Tilburg, Waalwijk and ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Since 2002, the Loonse en Drunense Duinen and De Brand, together with small other areas, have formed a national park.

The Maashorst is the largest contiguous nature reserve in North Brabant, surrounded by the municipalities of Bernheze, Uden, Landerd and Oss. A surprising natural and cultural landscape with beautiful forests and heaths, shifting dunes, fens, meadows and winding streams.

National Monument Camp Vught
Kamp Vught is a memorial site with a museum about the concentration camp Kamp Vught during the Second World War. The museum contains an indoor and outdoor area. The permanent and temporary exhibitions, the memorial room and the reaction wall can be seen in the memorial center.
