The 6 best restaurants in Den Bosch according to Bas
Den Bosch is known for its Burgundian atmosphere, and you taste that in the many restaurants and bars the city has to offer. I live in Den Bosch myself and I'm a real foodie. What I love most is going out for dinner with my partner or friends over a lovely glass of wine. I really appreciate a good wine with dinner. That combination made me want to share something about it. To prepare you as well as possible for a visit to the centre of 's-Hertogenbosch, I've made a list of the (in my and my partner's opinion) best restaurants in Den Bosch.
1. Restaurant Copain: a hidden gem with a courtyard garden
Lange Putstraat 10
Last weekend I went for dinner with friends at Restaurant Copain in the lively Lange Putstraat, right in the heart of Den Bosch. What struck me straight away was the atmosphere. The restaurant is modern and stylishly furnished, but with enough homely details to put you at ease immediately. We sat at a beautifully laid table with elegant tableware and glassware. That made a very good first impression.
As for the food, we wanted for nothing. Copain serves classic French dishes that not only taste delicious but look beautiful too. Among other things we tried oysters, duck rillette and eel on brioche. All the dishes were refined and full of flavour.
The wine list is worth a mention too. There's a fine selection and the staff are happy to advise. We followed a recommendation from the waiter and didn't regret it for a moment. Beyond the list there were even some surprising options available, which made it extra fun.
What stayed with me most was the way we were welcomed. The service was friendly and professional and struck exactly the right balance between attentive and relaxed. Together with the open kitchen and the atmospheric courtyard garden, that made for a warm and homely feel.
For me, Copain is a culinary asset for Den Bosch. Whether you come for drinks or for a full dinner, this place is about enjoying good company. We'll certainly be back.
2. Fabuleux: an evening to remember
Verwersstraat 23
Our last visit to Fabuleux was in August 2022, but my partner and I still think back on it fondly. Every time we cycle past, we tell each other we should go back soon.
That evening was one that stayed with us. Every detail was taken care of, yet the atmosphere stayed relaxed. The dinner felt like a perfect mix of classic and contemporary. The dishes were inspired by French cuisine with a modern twist. No unnecessary fuss, just plenty of flavour and finesse. Every plate was a joy to see and to taste.
The service completed the picture. The staff were warm and personal and very knowledgeable. The wine suggestions in particular were excellent and matched the dishes perfectly. The value for money was very good too, which made the evening all the more pleasant.
For me, Fabuleux remains one of the better restaurants in Den Bosch. It's a place where you know you'll have a special culinary evening. We look forward to eating there again soon.
3. De Keulse Kar: our number one spot next to St John's
Hinthamerstraat 101
For us, De Keulse Kar is not just any café. It's our regular haunt, a place where we feel at home. Located next to the impressive St John's Cathedral, this place radiates exactly the relaxed atmosphere we love so much.
The staff do everything their own way, and that's exactly what makes it so charming. No fuss, just genuine hospitality with a wink. You can tell there's room for character here, and that makes every visit special.
The wine list is good and there's a wide choice of craft beers, perfect for a relaxed afternoon or a cosy evening. In the summer months we enjoy delicious street food dishes on the terrace, while in winter we like to sit down for the à la carte menu with classics such as mama's satay and various stamppot dishes. Comfort food at its best.
In short: De Keulse Kar is a place where it's a pleasure to be. We love coming here and every time it feels like coming home. Even our dachshund Snor automatically walks in when we pass by ;)
4. Eten bij Fret: deliciously hip dining
Postelstraat 37
We recently ate together at Eten bij Fret in Den Bosch and were really pleasantly surprised. From the moment we walked in we felt welcome. The staff are incredibly friendly and have a good dose of humour, which immediately creates a relaxed atmosphere.
The place looks like a hip bistro: stylish, quirky and creatively furnished. It's somewhere you happily linger a little longer.
As for the food: the vegan dishes are original, surprising and incredibly tasty. You can taste that the cooking is done with great care and passion. Whether you come for breakfast, lunch or dinner, there's always something special on the menu.
We'll certainly be back. As far as we're concerned, Eten bij Fret is highly recommended!
5. Gusto: a piece of Italy in the heart of Den Bosch
Kolperstraat 8
We love going to Gusto and every time it feels as if we're in Italy for a moment. The Italian sandwiches are truly delicious, the homemade pastas and salads are fresh and flavoursome and the wines match perfectly. Everything is prepared and served with care.
The service is quick, friendly and always attentive. What makes it extra special is the hospitality of owner Albert. He knows like no other what hospitality means and makes sure you feel at home straight away. With a bit of luck he comes by with a glass of limoncello and a cheerful tune, which rounds it off perfectly.
At Gusto it's not just good food, it's an experience. Always convivial, always good. A moment of holiday in your own city! Opposite Gusto you'll find…
6. Aan Tafel BIJ Fagel: relaxed enjoyment in French style
Kolperstraat 11
…Aan Tafel BIJ Fagel is a small, cosy wine bar that takes you straight to France. As soon as you step inside you get a warm greeting with a smile from owner Pascale Fagel. A hostess with an enormous passion for wine and food, and you notice it in everything!
In the kitchen, a lady cooks with love and conjures up the most delicious French dishes. Think flavoursome cheese boards, poffertjes with smoked salmon, refined pâtés with excellent wines to match. Everything is just right here. The atmosphere is intimate and charming, as if you were sitting in a small French village. Recommended for anyone who loves cheese, homemade pâtés and wine!
